After breakfast in Arusha, you will drive to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park for registration and trek briefing. Upon arrival, meet your mountain crew and armed ranger before beginning your ascent through open grasslands and montane forest.
This section of the trail is famous for wildlife sightings, and you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and colobus monkeys along the way. The scenery gradually changes from savannah plains to dense forest with beautiful waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints.
You will stop for a picnic lunch en route before continuing to Miriakamba Hut, located in a peaceful forest setting beneath the mountain slopes.
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
After breakfast, continue trekking through lush mountain forest and giant heather vegetation as the trail steadily climbs toward Saddle Hut. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of the Meru Crater and the towering cliffs surrounding the mountain.
The landscape becomes more dramatic as you ascend into the alpine zone. Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, enjoy lunch and time to rest while acclimatizing for the summit push.
In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) can be arranged. This short trek offers excellent sunset views and helps prepare your body for summit night.
Hiking Time: 10–12 Hours
Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. Equipped with headlamps, you will ascend slowly through steep rocky terrain toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point before reaching the crater rim.
As dawn approaches, witness one of Africa’s most spectacular sunrises with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds in the distance.
After several hours of climbing, you will reach Socialist Peak (4,566m), the summit of Mount Meru. Celebrate your achievement, take photographs, and enjoy panoramic views across the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and surrounding plains.
After the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch and a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.
Hiking Time: 2–4 Hours
After breakfast, descend through the beautiful rainforest back to Momella Gate. Enjoy the final views of the mountain and surrounding wilderness while spotting birds and wildlife along the trail.
